When Farooq Abdullah wearing his signature Kashmiri karakul cap took oath today as Cabinet minister,it was for the first time that a father-in-law and son-in-law became ministerial colleagues at the Centre, even as the son is the chief minister of a state.
However,Farooqs portfolio,New and Renewable Energya somewhat disappointing ministryshowed the erosion of the National Conferences clout in New Delhi as well as that his reputation as a non-serious politician continues to hurt the party.
Significantly, his son and current CM Omar Abdullah served as Minister of State for Commerce and External Affairs in his two stints at the Centreboth respectable ministries.
While neither the Abdullah family nor the NC talked openly, the hushed voices in Srinagar were of disbelief, with many professing they had never heard of the ministry. Farooq sahib has been given gobar gas ministry, a senior NC leader remarked. This is a joke.
Many said they would have preferred if Farooq had declined to join the Government with such an insignificant ministry. At the same time, there is acknowledgement that being in power helps. It will certainly help the state, Omar said. Any proximity with the power corridors at Delhi is always helpful.
Anyway, while Farooq had stepped aside to allow Omar to become CM,the senior Abdullahs shadow had been lingering over the administration at every level.
