The trial in the 2002 Gulberg Society killings case is nearing completion with the Special Public Prosecutor advancing his final arguments before the specially appointed trial court presided over by Sessions Judge B J Dhandha. His arguments will be followed by the arguments of the defence lawyer.
On February 28,2002,69 people were killed by a violent mob inside Gulberg Society in the Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad, just minutes away from the Ahmedabad Police Commissioners office at Shahibaug. Sixty-six people are undergoing trial in the case.
Former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri was among those killed. Deposing before the trial court,a number of eye-witnesses have said that Jafri had made frantic calls to a number of people, including Chief Minister Narendra Modi, seeking security for Gulberg Society.
The trial in the case so far has been highly controversial with some witnesses accusing the former trial court judge B U Joshi of bias. The judge was ultimately transferred by an administrative order of the High Court Chief Justice, and subsequently replaced by Sessions Judge Dhandha.
The witnesses also wanted a number of top police officers, who were then posted in Ahmedabad,to be arraigned as accused for their complicity and dereliction of duty.
