Three top doctors of the state-run Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences NIMS here have been placed under suspension on the charges of allowing the stay of an undertrial prisoner in the hospital beyond required time, official sources said on Sunday.
NIMS Medical Superintendent Dr M Satyanarayana,Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr G Sarat Prasad and cardiologist Dr Sarat Chandra were suspended on Saturday pending further inquiry, they said. Based on a preliminary inquiry conducted by former NIMS director Prasanta Mahapatra, action was initiated against the trio and they have been kept under suspension,NIMS director A Dharma Rakshak said.
The three medicos allegedly allowed Jairam Reddy,an undertrial prisoner who is a double murder accused in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh,to overstay in hospital by stating that he needed treatment for 43 days during September and November last year, even though he was fit for discharge. The charges against the three doctors is that they kept the undertrial prisoner in the hospital without identifying him that he is a prisoner. Did it warrant whether the hospitalisation period, admission and treatment of the undertrial for such a long period among other allegations were being looked into? Dharma Rakshak said, adding that a report was submitted to the state government after a thorough inquiry against them and subsequently they were served suspension order.
Meanwhile, sources said that a high-level inquiry was likely to be carried out in the matter after discussions with Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy.
