The West Bengal government set up a one-man committee, a day after scribes were manhandled at Writers’ Building by a section of striking employees in the Taxation Department, ostensibly to suggest measures to discipline staff. But Finance Minister Ashim Dasgupta was not very clear on whether the panel’s terms of reference include the manhandling episode.
‘‘We have appointed a one-man committee comprising Finance Special Secretary Bikash Majumder which will look into whether employees at the Finance Taxation Department have flouted discipline,’’ Dasgupta told reporters on Sunday. The committee been asked to submit its report within October 7.
‘‘The government will take some strict administrative measures to enforce discipline in departments not only at Writers’ Building but other offices of the state government too on the basis of this report,’’ he said.
He, however, did not give a very clear answer whether the committee would go into the manhandling of journalists in the Finance Taxation Department. ‘‘The committee will find out whether employees had flouted rules and discipline in the office and it includes everything,’’ he said.
The incident took place on Saturday when journalists were gathering reports of striking employees at the Writers’ Building. The employees went on the warpath in protest against the government decision to reduce the amount of bonus for employees from Rs 2,000 to Rs 1,000.
After the incident, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya had expressed sorrow over the whole affair and promised an enquiry into the matter.
In this context, Dasgupta said the state is yet to receive a Rs 878 crore loan promised by the Centre to help it tide over the financial crisis. ‘‘We were told that there were still some procedural problems in handing over the money,’’ he said.
