NEW DELHI, May 28: Middlesex Wanderers overcame a stiff Delhi Blues XI in a well-contested exhibition tie to win it 1-0 at the Ambedkar Stadium here today. Yesterday, the visitors had beaten five-time champion side Shastri.
Delhi Blues, packing the midfield, played cleverly to thwart the clubside from England, whose tall and strong players found it difficult to penetrate the thick wall.
However, Andy Comyn was well inside the box when rightback Rob Cousins took the flag kick, which he nodded home with a powerful swing of the head. Delhi Blues also attacked with purpose but found the going tough against a solid Wanderers defence. Striker Dhanmender Khairola and wingerAftab Ashrafs triestested custodian Paul Gothard, who withstood the fury ably.
After change of ends, Delhi Blues brought in Bhupender Thakur, Vimal Thapa and Sanjay Sidhu, who posed several problems to the tiring Wanderers. But their defence came good on the day to keep Delhi Blues at bay.
