NAGPUR, AUG 27: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has assured Congress leaders from the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra that if a consensus is evolved among all political parties concerned, there would be no problem in creating a Vidarbha State.

The assurance came last night when a delegation of Congress leaders, including sitting as well as former MPs and MLAs, called on him and submitted a memorandum demanding a separate Vidarbha State.

“If the Maharashtra Legislature passes a resolution for the creation of a new State of Vidarbha, our job will be much easier,” Vajpayee told the delegation.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government could create the three new States of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttaranchal because there was a consensus among the NDA allies and the respective State Assemblies had passed resolutions for their creation, Vajpayee added.

The delegation, led by local MP Vilas Muttemwar, included Rajya Sabha members Vijay Darda and R S Gavai (RPI-Gavai) and former MPs Banwarilal Purohit and Balkrishna Wasnik, besides industrialists and social workers.
