NEW DELHI, June 14: Former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpyee today sought a judicial inquiry into yesterday’s fire in a Delhi cinema hall in which 59 people lost their lives.

Replying to questions of newsmen, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, who visited both the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and the Safdarjung Hospital to see the injured persons, said “there is a case for a judicial inquiry into the tragedy.”

“I hope it will be done,” Vajpayee added.

Vajpayee said that the amount of compensation announced by the administration for payment to the bereaved families and the injured persons was “considerably low” and said that the amount should be raised.

Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) also demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident. In a statement issued today, the CPI(M) Politburo expressed shock and grief at the mishap and demanded a proper and competent inquiry into the incident. Apart from punishing the guilty it is also essential to probe the existing arrangements for averting such mishaps in future, party said.
