US Army investigates Iraqi prisoner death

The US military has launched an investigation into the death of an Iraqi inmate who was shot on Friday at the US-run Abu Ghraib jail, where a prisoner abuse scandal erupted last year, an Army statement said on Friday. The brief statement gave no information on the circumstances of the shooting.

‘‘An Abu Ghraib detainee died from gunshot wounds on May 27 at approximately 5 a.m. after being transported to a coalition medical treatment facility,’’ the statement said. ‘‘The incident is under investigation.’’
