CHANDIGARH, Oct 4: Two different results for the same examination, and the extraordinary swiftness shown in the declaration of the result of a B.Com final year ward of a VIP has raised eyebrows on the Punjab University campus.
A student of B.Com final year obtained two results during re-evaluation from the university once on July 24 and the next on August 12. The student had a reappear in his annual examination when the result was declared in June, following which he applied for re-evaluation.
He personally obtained the confidential result from the university on July 24 which showed him as having passed with 1398 marks. Then for the second time, on August 12, he got another result where he was shown as having obtained 1455 marks.
Both these results were presented by the student for admission at the university on two different occasions, and he was admitted in the Department of Psychology on the basis of the second result. All this happened while the rest of the students who had applied for re-evaluation were still awaiting their results, which was declared a month later.
Controller of Examinations Dr Sodhi Ram when contacted initially declined any knowledge of the matter and remarked that such swiftness in the declaration of re-evaluation result was not possible. However, a week later when confronted with the details of the case, Dr Sodhi Ram stated that there was nothing illegal about the case, although he conceded that there was a certain element of haste in evaluation quot;for certain reasonsquot;. He explained the existence of two different results on the grounds that the answer sheets had to be sent to the third examiner as per university rules.
The issue has caused concern in the university as the process of rechecking of the result of the said student was processed at a quick pace. The quickness suggests that a particular batch of answer sheets was selectively picked up and sent for checking. Normally answer sheets are segregated and despatched randomly to maintain confidentiality. Moreover, a fictitious roll number is also affixed on all answer sheets to conceal the identity of the student.
The student too seemed to know that his answer sheet had been evaluated and that too twice. He simultaneously applied and obtained a confidential copy of the result on both the occasions. He also became one of the first students to obtain admission in the university on the basis of his re-evaluation result while the rest of the students were still waiting for the declaration of the result.
