In another jolt to the Meghalaya Democratic Party MDP, two of its MLAs, D P Langjuh and P T Sawkmie, have quit the party to join the United Democratic Party.

Both the MLAs would also submit their resignation from the Assembly on Tuesday to Speaker M M Danggo before formally joining the UDP.

According to sources, another MDP legislator is contemplating to leave the party. The MDP, which is a part of the Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance MDA Government, has four legislators.

As three of the four MDP legislators are quitting, the party is left with only its president and Social Welfare Minister Martle N Mukhim.

In their letters sent to Mukhim on Saturday, Langjuh and Sawkmie said, 8220;We have resigned from the primary membership of the party in order to bring back unity among the regional parties.8221;

Both the legislators will also have to resign from the Assembly membership to avoid being disqualified under the Anti-Defection Law.

Reacting to their resignation, Mukhim said the two legislators had created a lot of confusion in the party by taking such a long time to resign. He said, 8220;Now that both of them have left, it will help the party. They may say I am alone, but the fact is that there are many new faces waiting to join me in the fray.8221;
