Two from the edge

A year ago, if somebody told Dinesh Kaarthick that he could play for India in the World Cup, the wicket-keeper-batsman would8217;ve taken it as a bad joke. Now he is packing his suitcase. 8220;It8217;s all a matter of hard work and destiny,8217;8217; he says.

Neighbouring Tamil Nadu, from where Kaarthick comes, is Kerala, which has its first World Cup cricketer in S Sreesanth.

Sreesanth too would8217;ve preferred to laugh if you told him he would fly. 8220;I wasn8217;t sure until the day the team was announced,8217;8217; he says happily.

Luck couldn8217;t have played a better role in their lives. Kaarthick clicked in the last Test against South Africa, won India their first 20-20 match and came up with a match-winning effort in the ODI against West Indies at Cuttack.

8220;Sreesanth8217;s chances are not bright because if Munaf Patel is fit then we might consider an extra batsman in the side.8217;8217; In the end Sreesanth made it despite Munaf being picked. 8220;I was never confident,8217;8217; he says.

Statistics may raise questions about Sreesanth8217;s inclusion, but for the selectors his fitness decided. Sreesanth is walking with the likes of Zaheer Khan and Ajit Agarkar. 8220;I can feel it when it8217;s going to be my time. I feel good, fit, keep pumping myself time and again. I try to learn and go by what my seniors tell me,8217;8217; he says.

The same could be the case for Kaarthick, whose one-day stint in Dravid8217;s scheme of things began only after the South Africa tour. 8220;The only change is that it feels a little different not standing behind the stumps,8217;8217; says Kaarthick.
