
CHANDIGARH, AUG 3: Twelve teams are taking part in the inaugural Shriman Ishwar Singh Memorial Basketball Tournament to be held from August 5 to 9 at the I. S. Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 21/C, here according to Sumati Kanwar, secretary of the Shriman Ishwar Singh Memorial Education and Welfare Society. She also said that the tournament will be an annual affair.
The teams competing in the meet are: Govt Senior Model School, Sector 16, IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, Govt Model Sector 8, Bhawan Vidyala-27, Carmel Convent-26, Shishi Niketan-22, Sacred Heart-26, Govt Model-26, Shivalik Public School-41, Dev Samaj Junior Model School-21, Govt Model-18 and Guru Nanak Public School-36.
Deputy Commissioner-cum-Director Sports Chandigarh Administration M Ramsekhar will inaugurate the meet while Rupnagar Deputy Commissioner K S Sidhu will be the chief guest on the closing ceremony.
Ranking squash
The first Ranking squash tournament for schools will be organised at the Yadvindra Public School at S.A.S. Nagar near here, from August 6 to 8. This is the first time that an event like this is being held in the town for the school children. The qualifying rounds will be played on August 6 while the tournament proper will start the following day. The tourney will be played on knockout basis. Competition will be held in three categories 8211; Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16. Participants are required to bring their age-proof certificates.
Among others, St Stephen8217;s School and St John8217;s School from Chandigarh and Lawrence School Sanawar, Bishop Cotton School Shimla and Army Public School Dagshai have been invited to send their teams.

GFI elections
B S Ojha is likely to be unanimously re-elected president of the Gymnastic Federation of India in the general body meeting to be held at Kisan Bhawan in Chandigarh on August 8.
According to GFI sources, there seems to be triangular contest for the post of secretary. Federation secretary PS Virk of Punjab, Kang Singh Rathore of Rajasthana and DV Bhatia of Chandigarh are in the fray for this coveted post. Shiv Gian Budhwar of Chandigarh is tipped to be the treasurer.
Soccer abandoned
The Chandigarh State Sub-junior football tournament Under 16 semifinals, which were to be played today, have been abandoned due to rain and will now be played tomorrow at the DAV Sr Secondary School, Sector 8 ground.
Skating trials on Aug 8
The Roller Skating Federation of India will hold final selection trials from August 8 to 10 for the Asian Skating Championship to be held in China in October. According to Inder Pal Singh, coordinator of the Chandigarh coachig camp, trials would be held simultaneously in Chandigarh roller hockey, Vishakhapatnam speed and Ahmedabad artistic.
The cooridnator said that team and the standbyes would be selected during the trials. The second camp will begin on August 25 under the overall supervision of an Italian coach.
Meanwhile a lady coach from France has already joined the artistic camp at Ahmedabad.
Federation president Pradeep Ganeriwala is expected to attend the selection trials in Chandigarh.
