BJP signed in another footballer after Shyam Thapa when former Olympian Sahoo Mewalal joined the party on Tuesday. Joining the party in the presence of West Bengal BJP general secretary Rahul Sinha at the party office here, Mewalal told newsmen that he was impressed by the performance of the Vajpayee government. ‘‘BJP has invited me, so I have joined the party,’’ he said.

If it was a footballer in Kolkata, the party bagged former Indian cricketer Manoj Prabhakar’s wife Sandhya. At another function, party president M. Venkaiah Naidu also welcomed M. Rajendran (see photo), chairman and managing director of Raj TV, a popular South Indian television network, to the party.

SP had some good news, too. Former BJP MP from Mohanlalganj Purnima Verma joined the party on Tuesday. Welcoming Verma, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav expressed confidence that her entry would further strengthen the party.
