The 1998-99 India vs Pakistan Kolkata Test at the Eden Gardens was a classic example of reverse swing, leaving the stumps shattered at the end. Control of the match switched from one team to the other before it collapsed into spectator violence and a spectacular Pakistan victory. One of the most dramatic tests in India, eclipsed only by one at the same ground two years later

Day 1: Srinath lets loose
Pakistan 185 (Moin Khan 70; Javagal Srinath 5-46) vs India 26-1
First-ever Asian Test Championship match has a rip-roaring start, Srinath reducing Pakistan to 26-6 in just nine overs before Moin leads recovery

Day 2: A star is born
Pakistan 185 & 26-1 vs India 223 (S Ramesh 79; Shoaib Akhtar 4-71)
India’s reply off to a rocky start, only opener Ramesh able to stand tall. As innings stabilises, new boy Shoaib Akhtar — playing his ninth Test —does the unthinkable: cleans up
Rahul Dravid and then yorks Sachin Tendulkar off successive deliveries

Day 3: That man Anwar
Pakistan 185 & 316 (Saeed Anwar 188 n.o., Y Youhana 56; J Srinath 8-86) vs India 223 & 4-0
Saeed Anwar feeds off his favourite bowling but Srinath strikes at the other end. Pakistan collapse from 262-3 to 316. India need 279 to win the match

Day 4: Trouble, onfield and off it
Pakistan 185 & 316 vs India 223 & 214-6 (VVS Laxman 67, S Ramesh 40)
The Indian chase progressing at brisk pace with the openers putting on 108 runs before the collapse begins. Tendulkar holds the key but he gets run out when he is blocked/comes in the way of Akhtar. Crowd erupts, stops play for 45 minutes before appeals by stars and suits pay off. India end the day 65 runs away from victory

Day 5: More trouble but Pak winners
Pakistan 185 & 316 bt India 223 & 232 (Shoaib Akhtar 4-47)
In the end Pakistan needed just 37 balls to wrap up the Indian innings. But in theory it took longer. After Kumble became the ninth out, there was some more trouble from the crowd. Youhana, at fine-leg, was hit by an object and play was held up for 15 minutes. Finally the entire stadium was emptied by the police. The impact of that could be heard when another Akhtar yorker crashed into Venkatesh Prasad, the noise echoing all over Eden Gardens
Result: Pakistan won by 46 runs
Men of the Match: Javagal Srinath & Saeed Anwar
