Pre-quarter final: Germany 2 Mexico 1
Goals: Germany: Klinsmann 75, Bierhoff 86. Mexico: Hernandez 47.
Bookings: Germany: Babbel 45, Matthaus 57, Tarnat 78, Hamann 89. Mexico: Davino 57, Blanco 86.
90 minutes in a nutshell: Germany have still never failed to make the quarter-finals of a World Cup. Inspired by talisman Juergen Klinsmann and the fearsome presence of Oliver Bierhoff, they always looked the likely winners despite a few defence-splitting moves from the Mexicans.
Boy done good: Klinsmann continually worried the Mexican defence and showed all his experience to snatch the crucial equaliser in the 75th minute.Two left feet: Lara8217;s failure to clean up a cross in the 75th minute let Klinsmann in for Germany8217;s opener.
Magic moment: Aspe8217;s surging Sol Campbell-esque run past three German players in the 61st minute almost resulted in a classic goal for Mexico.
Mr Sitter: Bierhoff, usually reliable in the air, made a pedestrian attempt tomeet Klinsmann8217;s cross in the 39th minute and rattled the bar. Hernandez, in possesion in front of the German goal in the 62nd minute, also failed to put his side 2-0 up.
Shiver the timbers: Lothar Matthaus struck his own right-hand upright in the 62nd minute attempting to disposess Garcia Aspe.
Turning point: Hernandez8217;s miss in the 62nd minute in front of goal was Mexico8217;s last chance to tie up the game.
Refer-ee! A solid game from the Portuguese, though he showed a soft spot for Carmona8217;s theatrical dives.
Terrace talk: Germany: quot;A little careless early on, but thanks to that characteristic ruthless efficiency Ron Atkinson keeps talking about we saw off the Mexican threat.quot; Mexico: quot;Caramba! If Hernandez had only put away his 62nd minute chance we would have booked a quarter-final spot.quot;
Pre-quarter final: Holland 2 Yugoslavia 1
Goals: Holland: Bergkamp 38, Davids 90. Yugoslavia: Komljenovic 49.
Bookings: Yugoslavia: Stojkovic 38, Mirkovic 53,Djorovic 74.
90 minutes in a nutshell: It would have been a crime if Holland had failed to overcome a Yugoslavia team that had decided victory could be achieved tonight by playing nine men behind the ball. With golden-goal anxiety levels starting to build after the teams levelled at 1-1, Edgar settled it for Holland with a blistering shot in injury time.
Boy done good: Clarence Seedorf, who surely booked his place in Holland8217;s quarter final starting line-up after a fine display in midfield. He spent most of the match happily spraying balls out wide and providing the telling passes that give Holland the edge.
Two left feet: That penalty miss by Mjatovic in the 50th minute.
Magic moment: David8217;s winner. It followed two agonisingly blocked efforts by Seedorf and Overmars in injury time and spared everyone the discomfort of stomach ulcers brought on by golden-goal stress.
Mr Sitter: Mjatovic8217;s penalty miss again, for not even getting it on target in such a crucialgame.
Shiver the timbers: Only one whack on the woodwork. You guessed it, that Mjatovic miss again.
Cheered: The referee, for finally acknowledging that shirt-pulling an offence and awarding a penalty against Joop Stam.
Jeered: Bergkamp, for stamping on Sinisa Mihajlovic and generally being a stroppy git in and around opposing defenders.
Turning point: The penalty miss. After that, Yugoslavia looked as though they had shot their only bolt.
Ref-er-ee! Had a good game over all and deserves special mention for picking up on shirt-pulling.
Terrace talk: Holland: quot;The orange march is on again.quot; Yugoslavia: quot;When push comes to shove, we8217;ll get out of the way and hide at the back.quot;
