NOVEMBER 26: As many as 70 rated players with many International Masters and IWM’s are expected to participate in the Young Challengers-organised International Rating Chess Tournament from November 28 to December 13 at the Andheri Sports Complex.
IMs Ponnuswamy Konguvel, Lanka Ravi, Niraj Mishra, Sudhakar Babu, Shekar Sahu, Sharad Tilak, Arun Vaidya and IWM’s Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman, who is currently playing in the World Junior championships, and Bhagyashree Thipsay are likely to participate in the tournament.
From November 28 to December 1 will be the 11-round rapid tournament, which was won by Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay last time when it was held in 1994. The classic tournament, also of 11 rounds, will begin from December 2.
The winner of the tournament stands to gain Rs 51,000 with 51 prizes to be given away. There are special prizes for 10 best women, juniors (under-18), sub-juniors (under-12) in boys and girls.
Entries can be submitted at Challenger Chess Academy, 1/51, Shiv Smriti, JP Nagar,Goregaon (E), Mumbai 63 (8737534, 8759282) and the Bombay Chess Association office at Zandu Pharmaceutical Canteen between 6.00 pm and 9.00 pm.
Nevagi champ
Milind Nevagi and Sagar Sadavarte won in the under-16 and under-14 categories of the Junior Chess Selection tournament, organised by the Bombay Chess Association, to select 48 players for a year’s coaching camp.
Nevagi accepted a quick draw in seven moves with Sushant Kamatekar while Sadavarte defeated Milind Ketakar at the Zandu Pharmaceutical Works Canteen, Sayani Road. Both collected 4.5 points out of a possible five.
In the under-14 category, Niral Sanghvi defeated Parag Terwadkar and ties with Sadavarte with 4.5 points for the top spot. Even the cut progressive scores did not resolve the tie and then the winner was decided on the toss of coin which fell in favour of Sadavarte.
In the under-12 category, Gaurav Hingne of Navi Mumbai School, Vashi scored his fifth consecutive victory by defeating Wesley Falcao to be the sole leader.Omkar Kulkarni trails Gaurav half a point behind after he defeated Leann Almeida.
In the under-8 section, Parth Agarwal and Siddharth Kotian share the lead with 36 players on 4 points.
