CHENNAI, MARCH 21: Owning moral responsibility for the party8217;s debacle in the Lok Sabha polls, 24 office bearers and 36 district presidents of Tamil Manila Congress TMC today resigned from their posts, to enable its president G K Moopanar to effect a party revamp.

Unlike in 1996, when the TMC won all the 20 seats it contested, the party could muster only three seats this time despite contesting the same number of seats. The party performance came as a rude shock8217;, the TMC treasuer D Sudharashanam, told newsmen at party headquarters here.

He said the results had shown that the party needed to be rejuvenated from grassroots level and hence the office bearers and other leaders including those from the front organisations had sent in their resignations to enable Moopanar to revamp it.

8220;We have sent in our resignations and now it8217;s up to the party president to take a decision on the matter,8221; Sudharashanam said.

He said the office bearers would abide by whatever decision Moopanar took 8220;but we willfully cooperate8221; with him in the process of party8217;s revamp and rejuvenation.

Those resigned included three general secretaries S G Vinayagamurthy, B S Gnanadesikan and S Peter Alphonse, MP. Soon after the debacle, Moopanar had expressed dissatisfaction over the party8217;s performance.
