Virender Sehwag has captained India at Motera against Sri Lanka 8212; a couple of months ago during the ODI series. He was stand-in skipper in the second innings after an exhausted centurion Rahul Dravid opted to rest in the dressing room.
That half-day stint, Sehwag told his coach Greg Chappell, had left him 8216;8216;totally exhausted8217;8217;. The coach8217;s reply might well have been, 8216;8216;You ain8217;t seen nothing yet.8217;8217;
It8217;s not just the complications surrounding the match itself that will tax Sehwag; he will be on trial as a future captain. There are other claimants for the job and his every move will be closely watched.
Going by the Motera ODI India8217;s only loss in the series, it should be interesting. Sehwag came across as a hyperactive captain, to say the least. His resources were limited 8212; Tendulkar, Harbhajan and Irfan were rested 8212; but he gave it all that night. Frequent field changes, over-the-top celebrations and notably expressive in his anger after an error on field meant a drained out skipper at the end of the day.
Over five days, energy conservation should be high on his agenda.
Or maybe his top priority should be to address his dipping form. Because we all know what happens to captains who run out of form.
