Promising French teenager Gael Monfils had a few hiccups initially but managed to advance to the next round defeating Isreali Noam Okun to set up a second round clash with Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty. The teenager who won the Australian, French and Wimbledon junior titles last year won 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 16-14 after being set point down in the fourth set tie-break.

Local favourite and sixth seed Tim Henman will take on Finn Jarkko Nieminen in what could be an interesting contest on day two. The left-hander had knocked out Andre Agassi in the first round of the French Open this year.
Upset of the day
Antonella Serra Zanetti beat the Swiss 10th seed Patty Schnyder in three hard-fought sets to advance to the second round at Wimbledon for the first time. The Italian won 6-4, 6-7 7-9, 6-3.
