Terrorists on the run, Centre doing nothing: BJP

Harping on the internal security situation issue, BJP chief Rajnath Singh said the UPA govt neither has the will nor any 'concrete action plan or strategy' to counter terrorism.

.

In a direct attack on the Prime Minister, the BJP on Monday blamed the National Security Council NSC headed by him of 8220;failure8221; in preventing terror attacks and demanded that the 8220;responsibility and accountability8221; of the wing be fixed.

Harping on the internal security situation issue, BJP chief Rajnath Singh said the UPA government neither has the will nor any 8220;concrete action plan or strategy8221; to counter terrorism, thus giving an impression that India was 8220;soft8221; on terrorists.

8220;What is the accountability and responsibility of the NSC which functions under the Prime Minister and his team. It has become just a scare-monger,8221; he said, reacting to Sunday night8217;s deadly blast at a film theatre in Ludhiana.

The NSC was managed by the Prime Minister8217;s Office PMO and it was time the 8220;accountability and responsibility8221; of the wing was fixed, he said. The National Security Advisor NSA only creates fear in the minds of the people by predicting terror strikes, he added.

8220;Terrorist incidents are on the rise. Terrorists are having a free run. The whole country is worried but the Home Ministry is just predicting and doing nothing,8221; he said.

Singh also accused the government of 8220;tying the hands8221; of intelligence and security agencies. 8220;The security agencies have become handicapped. The government is not allowing them to function on the basis of credible information,8221; he added.

Singh alleged the Congress-led government has instructed security agencies not to act against terrorists unless there is 8220;credible evidence8221; and this has drained the morale of security forces.

8220;The attitude of the government is favouring terrorists. It has strengthened their resolve,8221; he said and sought to know whether the Manmohan Singh administration has taken the task of counter-terrorism as a challenge.

8220;All the countries which are facing the scourge of terrorism have effective anti-terror laws whereas the Congress led government here has dismantled POTA, enacted by the NDA government,8221; he said.

Singh said the BJP would 8220;fully support8221; the government if it enacts an 8220;effective8221; anti-terror legislation on the lines of POTA or comes out with a concrete action plan to tackle the challenge.

8220;India has become a soft state under the UPA government. It has also not taken any diplomatic initiative to ensure that the ISI is put on international watch list,8221; the BJP President alleged.

He also asked the government to come out with the data on the number of terrorists killed and sleeper modules unearthed in the last three-and-a-half years and claimed that the recent terror attacks were the handiwork of sleeper cells.
