PATIALA, Oct 19: The District Transport Office here has impounded 10 private buses plying illegally in the district during the past one week.

Stating this while talking to The Indian Express here today, Avtar Chand Sharma, District Transport Officer, said two of these impounded buses belonged to Haryana Transport operators and the buses from the neighbouring state usually enter Punjab territory in the Patran area of this district.

Sharma said that during the drive against such operators, a penalty of Rs 35,000 had been recovered from the erring transporters and added that in view of the orders issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the vigil against traffic violators had been stepped up and this pressure would continue against those violating the laid down traffic rules.

The DTO said that during the week-long campaign, six buses of the PEPSU had had been challaned as the drivers or the conductors of these buses had been detected to be travelling without a valid licence. The transport office teams had also detected buses belonging to the HRTC and the Haryana Roadways which did not have valid licences.

The DTO said that during the week-long check, 16 drivers/conductors were found to be on duty without uniforms. A total of ten vehicles were carrying extra load and five had no registration papers.

He said that 24 drivers had been challaned for not wearing helmets, while nine vehicles had pressure horns and another seven had black films which were prohibited under rules.
