COLOMBO, April 2: Sri Lanka8217;s star athlete and world silver medallist Susanthika Jayasinghe has tested positive in a dope test recently carried out by the International Amateur Athletics Federation. Jayasinghe, who is training for the upcoming Commonwealth Games and the Bangkok Asian Games, faces a four-year ban if a second test, which will be done next week, also shows positive.
The controversial athlete was not available for comment but she has reportedly alleged that the samples, which were collected by the Amateur Athletics Association AAA of Sri Lanka and sent to the IAAF lab in Australia, were not sealed according to regulations.
An official of the AAA confirmed that a urine test on Susanthika had shown up traces of a banned performance enhancing drug, but said these were only quot;partial resultsquot; and a conclusive result would be available only quot;after four or five days.quot;
quot;The IAAF has informally informed us that there are some traces of a banned drug. But this is only an indication and nothing hasbeen positively established yet. There remain a series of other tests to be done and only then we can conclusively say whether or not she has tested positive,quot; AAA secretary Rohan Amarasinghe told The Indian Express.
Denying the sample was tampered, he quoted from the IAAF report that it had arrived at the lab quot;in perfect orderquot; with the quot;seal intactquot;. It was taken on March 5 at the sports medicine lab of the Sri Lankan Sports Ministry here as part of the IAAF8217;s off-season tests on all international athletes.
