Surat bagged three ranks, while Rajkot and Bhavnagar had one each among the list of toppers.

Anxious parents and students thronged school campuses well before 11 a.m. for the results. In terms of girls and boys, both had an equal share with six boys and six girls among the top 12. In the overall pass percentage, girls outperformed boys with 65.05 per cent while the boys had a pass percentage of 54.77.

English-medium schools, which form only 15 per cent of the total schools in the city, had four toppers from schools like St Xaviers Higher Secondary School, Mirzapur, St. Xaviers Loyola Hall, and Udgam School, Thaltej.

8220;This year the number of students that have taken admission in the science stream has come down while the results are better. This only shows that parents are being more judicious about making their children chose the stream,8221; said R. Tevatia, president, Gujarat Higher Secondary Board.

In the medicine and engineering merit lists, the topper had 444 marks out of 450. The 37 children who made it were within the percentage of 96.44.

8220;Seeing the science subject result excluding the languages, it is seen that even non-urban centres performed well. It only goes on to prove that it is language teaching which is suffering in smaller places,8221; said Tevatia.

Several steps had been taken to minimise cheating, like bar-coding of answer sheets where maximum confidentiality had been maintained regarding the identity of the student. The processing of results was also faster. 8220;Even CBSCE has not been able to it so effectively,8221; said Tevatia.

From the next academic year, 7.5 lakh students will benefit from this system instead of the 40.000 this year.

According to the board, introduction of multiple question papers are also being considered for the current academic year to minimise cheating within the examination hall. There were 79 cases of cheating this year.
