Cong workers stage dharna
Surat: Congress workers staged a dharna in front of the collectorate on Wednesday to protest against what they claim misbehaviour by district collector R M Shah with senior leaders like city president Thakorbhai Naik and GPCC vice-president Kadir Pirzada when they called on him to highlight irregularities in distribution of cash doles to the affected persons. They shouted slogans and faxed a memorandum to the chief secretary detailing their grievances. They also staged a Rasta Roko affecting vehicular traffic in the evening. The memorandum alleged that the collector and his administration had utterly failed in providing relief to the affected persons.

Legal directory
District judge A Kureshi released the Lawyers8217; Directory for 1998-99 at a function organised by the Surat District Bar Association in the bar room on Wednesday. Member of disciplinary committee of Gujarat Bar Council and former president of Surat bar Babubhai Rayka and Rameshbhai Shah were felicitated at the hands of the district judge on the occasion. The directory has telephone numbers of all judges and lawyers.

Flood aid
The Lions Clubs International Foundation has sanctioned an amount of Rs 4.26 lakh to help the flood-affected persons of Surat. According to region chairman Manohar Trikannad, a function will be organised at Krishna Nagar, New Kosad Road in Amroli on Thursday where as many as 950 kits consisting of 10-kg wheat, five kg rice, two kg pulse, one litre oil and two woolen blankets would be distributed.

Residents8217; protest
After Rudarpura and other areas, residents of Bhatar and Tadkeshwar slums of the city have threatened a fast unto death, alleging that they had not been given cash doles by the authorities, as promised earlier. The residents claim that no official visited them and distributed them cash doles after the flood.

Interrogation
Controversial builder and land broker Hanskamal Grover, who was taken to Mumbai for investigations into a number of offences will be brought to the city on Thursday morning, Police Commissioner Maniram said on Wednesday evening. Grover, who was arrested on Saturday night from a Vadodara hotel, is an accused in four cases of land grabbing besides a case under the Atrocities Act. A team of five police officials has been appointed to oversee the interrogations in Grover8217;s cases.

Forum meet
Bharuch: The 30th meet of the Book Lovers8217; Forum will be held on Thursday in the corporate office auditorium of the Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilisers Company Ltd GNFC, Bharuch district, at 6 pm.
