Teachers stay away from school
The stand-off between the management and the teachers of Sarita Vidyalaya, A K Road, continued on Wednesday, with the management providing two days to 10 teachers currently on mass casual leave to resume duties with an explanation why they were staying away from classes. The teachers, who are backed by the Surat Shahar Manya Khangi Prathamik Shikshak Sangh, are seeking justice for teacher Savita Satasiya, who was allegedly beaten in the school premises. The SSMKPSS has decided to further intensify the agitation after June 12.

Centenary
Mahajan Anath Balashram, Surat, will turn 100 on Thursday. The institution, which does not accept State government grant, plans to increase its capacity — 132 orphans live there now — to accommodate 70 children more as part of centenary celebrations. It runs a school that imparts education up to the X Standard. Introducing a HSC course and constructing a laboratory and a community hall are among the projects the institution has in mind for the centenary year.

Space contest
The Aryabhatt Astronomy Society and the Rotary Club of Surat have organised a drawing and painting competition for school children. Students of standards V, VI and VII have the subjects The planets I love’ and A Tour of Space in the year 2000′. Students of standards VIII, IX and X will have to write 500-word essays in English, Gujarati or Hindi on one of the following topics: The planet I like most in the solar system’, Space Travel: Is The Expenditure Worth It?’ and Latest Inventions in the Field of Astronomy’. Their entries should reach Ashwin Mehta Planetarium, Chowk Bazaar, or Prabhawatiben Dixit by July 21.
