Met dept warning
A met department warning issued here on Tuesday said that parts of the district and region were likely to receive heavy to very heavy showers in the next 24 hours. The district collector has directed all officials concerned to be on alert and in touch with the flood control room. On Tuesday evening, the water in the Ukai reservoir stood at 333.64 feet, a good 10 feet below the danger mark of 345 feet.

Dead
Arvind Shah, proprietor of Suvidha Advertisers, affiliated to the Indian Newspapers Society, died on Tuesday morning in the Girish Group of Hospitals, where he was admitted on Monday after suffering a stroke. The final rites of the leading businessman were held in the evening. He is survived by his wife and two children. A condolence meeting is to be held at his residence on Wednesday evening.

Memorandum
Member of Legislative Assembly Farooq Shaikh from Ahmedabad, today handed over a memorandum to the city police commissioner, criticising what he called 8220;indiscriminate firing by the police on a group of Muslims8221; at Bhagatalav on Thursday last. He also demanded a proper inquiry into the death of Mohammed Madani 18, who died in the police firing, and compensation to the next of kin of the deceased. Shaikh, accompanied by city Congress leaders, handed over the memorandum on Tuesday.

Musical meet
Kribhco is organising a classical Sangeet Sammelan8217; on September 25. Hari Charan Verma, renowned AIR/TV vocalist of Gwalior Gharana, will present a classical vocal recital, while Ashish Shashtri of Surat will play the Sitar. The Sammelan will be held at 8 pm at Central School Auditorium, Kribhconagar.

Debate
The New India Assurance Company Ltd, Surat, organised a debate competition on September to mark Hindi Day. Topics for the elocution contest included 8220;Election 1999, Kargil, Indian cricket, and privatisation of the insurance industry. Assistant Director of Income tax Vijay Kumar Dubey was the chief guest at the function. While Rajesh Rathod bagged first prize, Vasant Patel bagged second prize.

Quake in B8217;nagar
Ahmedababd:
An earthquake of mild intensity struck Bhavnagar city and its surroundings at 11:40 am on Tuesday. According to police, people panicked and ran out of their houses. However, there were no reports of casualty. Eyewitnesses said that in the tremors, which were felt for about three seconds, doors and windows of many buildings were damaged.

I-T raids
Income Tax officials conducted a raid on five office premises of Bhavani group of companies in the city on Tuesday. Officials raided the group8217;s premises on Deputy Income Tax Commissioner Rajvanshi Sidha8217;s orders. The group, which make engineering parts, have offices in Gondal road and Aji Vasahat. Bhavani Udyog, Bhavani Engineering, Bhavani Enterprises, Bhavani Industries and Bhagwati Metals are owned by Sureshbhai Nandwana and Pankajbhai Nandwana. The raids were conducted under section 133 of Income Tax rule.
