NEW DELHI: The government has released 50,000 tonnes of sugar as additional quota for September 1998. With this additional release, the total quantity of sugar available for internal consumption during September would be 8.5 lakh tonnes.Recently, the high-powered Mahajan Committee on the sugar industry had recommended that government decontrol the sugar industry over a two-year period and discontinue the supply of sugar through PDS.The committee was set up following a directive by the Allahabad High Court on a petition challenging state governments powers to advice sugar mills on cane price payable to growers.
