New Delhi, Oct 8: About 40 foreign athletes from six countries will be part of a 120-strong field that will vie for honours in the first Salwan and Fourth Raja Bhalendra Singh meets to be held here on October 12 and 15 respectively.

Athletes from Belarus, Sri Lanka, Iran, Kenya, Ukraine, Mauritius and India will fight it out in select events in the two meets aimed at providing the vital competition and exposure to the hosts, at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium here.

The Amateur Athletic Federation of India AAFI planned to encourage private sponsors to hold meets on a permanent basis and the Salwan meet will also become an annual affair, AAFI secretary, Lalit Bhanot told a press meet today.

Top Sri Lankan woman sprinter-quarter miler Damayanti Darsha was expected to be the star attraction after being included in the initial list submitted by the islanders.

Both the one-day meets, coming towards the end of the Indian season, will be restricted to 13 events with foreign participation in 10 of them.

Competition will be held in men8217;s 100m, 200m, 400m, 5000m, long jump, shot put and discus throw.

Bhanot said the AAFI planned 8220;double periodisation8221; for next year with a four-week competition period in February followed by a three-week schedule nearing the Sydney Olympics to be held in September.

The Salwan meet will have competition in the junior section also in boys 100m, 400m, 800m and 3000m. A Pakistan squad is expected to participate in this section.
