
Manipur Govt declares bandhs illegal
IMPHAL: The Manipur Government has declared the calling and holding of bandhs as quot;illegal, unconstitutional and against the law laid down by the Supreme Court of India.quot; A Government notification to this effect, made available to the press on Friday, said there had been instances of increased frequency and regularity in the calling, holding and enforcing of bandhs in the State by various associations, organisations, political parties or by a section of people in the recent past.
Chief Secretary H Jelshyam said in the notification dated August 19, that bandhs had caused destruction of public and private property apart from causing inconvenience to people.
The notification further said the Government was concerned with this state of affairs and the general public and all the associations, organisations or groups must recall an earlier ruling of the Supreme Court in this regard.
Army school puts up heroes8217; gallery
NEW DELHI: The Army public school herehas put up a heroes8217; gallery to pay homage to seven former students who died in the Kargil conflict and during counter-insurgency operations in the Kashmir Valley over the year.
The ex-students who laid down their lives are Major Vivek Gupta and Captains Anuj Nayyar, Vijayant Thapar, Aditya Mishra, Sanjeev Dahiya and Lieutenants Atul Kataria and Amit Verma.
Train goes off track in Chennai
CHENNAI: An alert driver of the Allepey-bound Bokaro Express averted a major accident when he stopped the train within a few metres of its running on the wrong track at Basin Bridge.
The incident occurred on Friday, soon after the train left Chennai Central at around 7.50 am. The train, instead of running towards Arakkonam, went onto the Gummidipoondi track after the route was wrongly set at Basin Bridge, railway sources said.
Three charred to death in Bangalore
BANGALORE: Three members of a family were charred to death when their hut caught fire at Igur village in Davangere district of Karnataka onFriday night.
Police said here today the deceased were a 60-year-old woman, her 45-year-old daughter and eight-year-old grandson.
11 get life sentences in murder case
DALTONGANJ BIHAR: Eleven persons were today sentenced to life imprisonment by a Palamu court in connection with a murder case.
The sixth Additional District and Sessions Judge Palamu H K Singh found the 11 accused guilty of murder of one Saddik Sheikh and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
