Veteran Marathi actor Suryakant Mandre dead

PUNE: Veteran Marathi film actor Suryakant Mandre, who was renowned for his enactment of the role of Chatrapati Shivaji, passed away here this morning. He was 73. He is survived by his wife Sushila and three sons. The veteran actor had complained of chest pain this morning and was rushed to a private hospital. But he passed away on the way to the hospital.Mandre made a foray into the Marathi cine world as a child artiste when he acted in Dhruv produced in 1938.

Miscreants stone SRP personnel

VADODARA: Two State Reserve Police SRP personnel and a girl were injured in stone-throwing following clash between two communities here today. The Panigate police inspector said that a milk tempo and tractor driver had a scuffle. The nearby SRP personnel, who were posted in the locality in view of Lok Sabha elections intervened and sorted out the matter. The tempo driver Azimulluddin Sheikh left the tempo on the road and went to Taiwadi and brought 15-16persons and they started pelting stones on the SRP personnel.

Two hurt in firing across border

JAMMU: Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fire along the border in Jammu division last evening, injuring two women from either side, official sources said today. The Indian woman was injured when Pakistani troops resorted to firing in the Pindi Khadwal area of R S Pura sub-sector, the sources said, adding she had been hospitalised. The Pakistani woman, Shamima Akhtar, sustained bullet injuries during an exchange of small arms fire between Pakistani rangers and border security force troops at Lehari Kalan area, opposite Samba sub-sector, they said.

One lakh pilgrims visit Amarnath

JAMMU: About 1.04 lakh pilgrims have so far visited Amarnath for the annual pilgrimage to the cave shrine as the holy yatra entered final phase with arrival of chari mubarak at Pahalgam base camp. While most of the pilgrims preferred traditional route via Pahalgam-Chandanwari-Sheshnag, Panchtarn and the holy cave,several thousand devotees took short trek of about 12 km from Baltal route.
