DECEMBER 10: The Maharashtra government will sympathetically consider the proposal of allowing Urdu-medium candidates to answer their papers in competitive exams in Urdu so as to help them compete more confidently, state Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has said.

Speaking at a reception hosted by the Anjuman-e-Islam on Thursday, Deshmukh said the present government in Maharashtra is committed to the spirit of secularism and preserving the spirit of 8220;sarva dharma samabhav8221;. It has reinstated the Sate Minorities Commission, which was disbanded by the former Shiv Sena-BJP government, an official release said.

Husain Allana presented a cheque of Rs 4 lakh to Deshmukh for rehabilitation of cyclone-hit families of Orissa.

Present on the occasion were former chief minister, A R Antulay, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Prataprao Bhosle, scholar Dr Rafique Zakaria, Minister of State, Laxman Dhoble, former mayor Nirmala Samant-Prabhavalkar, and members of the Corps of Foreign Consulates.

Earlier, the entire gathering was administered an oath of national integration and integrity, the release added. Dr Ishaq Jamkhanwala, president of Anjuman-e-Islam welcomed the audience while A A Khatkhate, general secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.
