AHMEDABAD, DECEMBER 19: A time-tested tactic on the athletics track is to break away from the pack by the half-way mark. A similar pattern was witnessed on the fourth day of the 2nd Asian Youth Chess Championship here today. Clear leaders emerged in five of the six categories after the four rounds. And the hosts wore smiles on their faces as four of these leaders were Indians.

The local stars with top of pack status were Koneru Humpy, P Harikrishna, Mary Ann Gomes and C Delphine. The lone leader from abroad was Son Nguyen Ngoc Truo of Vietnam in the boys under-10 category.

In girls under-10, Gomes beat Soumya Swaminathan to grab the lead with four points. Humpy, the lone girl in the under-12 boys category, made short work of Sayantan Dutta in a Reti opening symmetric game in just 37 moves. In the under-14 section, top seed P Harikrishna downed the unbeaten local boy and current under-14 National champion Valay Parikh at the top board.
