
MUMBAI, MAY 9: Stanley Fernandes8217; brace helped Andheri XI win the 4th Annual City and Suburbs hockey champions tournament organised by Mumbai Veterans hockey Association at the St Andrew8217;s, Bandra ground today. Andheri XI defeated Chembur XI with a 2-1 margin.
Fernandes scored the late winner for Andheri team, with a reverse flick in the dying minute of the match.
After a barren first-half, Fernandes deflected Weldon Miranda8217;s through pass in the 46th minute to put the winners ahead. Vinod Kumar drew parity for Chembur XI when he converted the penalty stroke. Umpire Sukhbir Singh pointed to the spot when Ganesh Pillay was brought down by Andheri deep defender A Passi.
Both the teams had a number of nationals in their ranks but failed to combine in the first-half. Chembur team had nine Rashtriya Chemical and Fertilizer RCF players in the playing eleven, but failed to get past Andheri tight defence.
While on the other hand, Andheri, a mix of youngsters and experienced players had planned their attacksfrom both the flanks.
Miranda, who was later declared as man-of-the-final, controlled the mid-field.
Republicans champs
Bombay Republicans made it look easy as they demolished Central Bank of India 13-4 for the title in the Open Rink hockey tournament conducted by Bandra Gymkhana, today.
Repubilicans went home richer by Rs 10,000, while CBI pocketed Rs 5,000. Aldrin Bird of Republicans was adjudged the player of the tournament.Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers beat Bank of India 7-4 for the hardlines trophy.
