VADODARA, July 9: Even as the Vadodara Municipal Corporation gears up for the elections for the standing committee chairman8217;s post, to be held on Friday, speculations continue in the civic corridors about the date of implementation of the Mayor-in-Council system.

The Committee meeting, however, is likely to be adjourned to a date closer to the day for the mayoral polls, which have to be held before July 20 under the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation Act. Councillors have to be given a clear week8217;s notice for the mayoral elections, excluding the date of publishing the circular and the date of polling.

According to BJP sources, Gandhinagar has changed its mind several times over the implementation of the MIC. While a group led by former State party president Vajubhai Vala favours making one municipal corporation a model, followed by the rest of the corporations, the one headed by Urban Development Minister Kaushikbhai Patel wants it to be introduced across the board at the earliest.

However, sources said it was now certain that the system would not be introduced before the mayoral poll, implying that a woman will ascend to that chair in Vadodara. However, it was unlikely that she would continue after the system was introduced, they added.
