MUMBAI, June 16: A clarion call to save the Vikrant has emerged from citizens with a city-based event management group launching its SOS Vikrant8217; campaign. The goal, to prevent the navy8217;s decommissioned aircraft carrier Vikrant from going to scrap.

Frustrated by bureaucratic delays in converting the aircraft carrier into a Rs 76 crore maritime museum, the navy had resolved to scrap the ship if a decision to grant it a berth off South Mumbai was not taken by July 31.

It is this deadline which spurred C Factory into action to launch their SOS Vikrant-Citizen Comrades in Action. quot;We feel strongly for the ship, it8217;s part of the heritage of the country and should under no circumstances go for scrap, quot; said Anupama Mukherjee of C Factory.

For over a year now, the Mumbai Port Trust MbPT has been ruminating over the navy8217;s proposal to grant a site off the Radio Club in Colaba, even as the ship rapidly deteriorates in its berth at the naval dockyard. quot; Our role is to motivate people and convince them this isof, for and by the people, quot; says C Factory8217;s Deepak Jagtiani. As a first step, the organisers plan a huge gathering of school and college students from Mumbai on the Vikrant to draw public attention to the plight of the ship. They have also focussed the corporate sector for sponsoring their drive.

Organisers say their campaign has received an excellent response so far with calls pouring in pledging support from schools and the corporate sector. In the second phase of their crusade, the organisers see the participation of college students and adult citizens in massive drives and gatherings. quot;We aim to project a common citizens forum and voice, quot; says Jagtiani.
