Sweta Solanki continued her good run in the women8217;s National tennis championship, scoring an easy win against Tamil Nadu8217;s Kesika Jayapalan 6-1, 6-1 in the second round at the DLTA Complex on Tuesday.
The second seed Delhi girl had no problems getting past Jayapalan with her impressive court coverage, making her opponent work hard and run all around. Jayapalan had no answers to Solanki8217;s agility, struggling to hold her own serves and managing to win just two games in the match that was over in less than an hour.
Up next for Solanki, though, is C Shweta Rana, who has been hitting good form this week. Having come through the qualifiers, Rana continued her winning streak with an impressive 7-5, 6-4 upset win over eighth seed Treta Bhattacharya.
This was Rana8217;s fifth match in a row this week, but the gritty girl made sure there were no hiccups in her way to advancing to the next round. Rana attacked from the start, going a break up in the second game itself. But that was before Bhattacharya decided to not let things run away and broke back in the fifth game, then levelled scores at 5-5.
Rana finally capitalised on her strong baseline play and accurate forehands to win the first set, then Bhattacharya8217;s edgy serve and two double faults to eventually wrap up the match in one hour 25 minutes.
In other singles matches, seventh seed Geeta Manohar got past wild card Gopika Kapoor 7-6 7, 6-1 while Sayali Bhilare of Maharashtra upset third seed Abhilasha Ahuja of Haryana 6-0, 7-5.
