The Ramanathapuram police today took three Sri Lankan Tamils, believed to be LTTE operatives, in a Coast Guard hovercraft along the district8217;s coastline right up to Tuticorin, to make them identify landing and take-off points for smuggling operations.
The exercise is significant in the wake of a stern warning by CM M Karunanidhi against the politician-LTTE nexus. The action also follows a series of seizures of materials meant to be smuggled to the LTTE in Sri Lanka.
A police team led by SP R Thirugnanam took the three men 8212; arrested on February 14 from near the Adam8217;s Bridge while trying to smuggle aluminum ingots for the LTTE 8212; by sea and land to identify the points along the porous coastline used by smugglers. The ingots were meant to be used for making IEDs and landmines.
The police said the men identified coastal Vypar near Tuticorin as the place from where they had taken their consignment. The three men apparently admitted to smuggling the aluminum ingots and other materials to be used in explosives in a few boat trips before they were caught. The smugglers took their boat with the arms cargo up to the International Border Line in the sea, said the police.
