SURAT, May 13: The Surat Municipal Corporation plans to build embankments on the Tapi river within the city limits as a flood protection measure. Civic and irrigation department officials held discussions on Wednesday to co-ordinate efforts. The scheme, popularly known as Pala Yojna8217;, was devised in 1972. However, the irrigation department stopped the work following protests from farmers whose land had been acquired. City residents clamoured for reviving the scheme after the city was hit by floods last September.
Though the scheme is under the Irrigation Department, Chief minister Keshubhai Patel has asked civic authorities to start work on the embankment.
The chief minister said the government would bear half the total cost, while the remainder would have to be borne by the SMC. The wall is to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 28 crore.
SMC standing committee chairman Ajay Choksi broached the subject with the chief minister, who gave the go-ahead. Choksi told Express Newsline that the cost estimate might be revised and the old design changed if necessary.
A senior civic official said work on the scheme would start within 10 days. 8220;We will ensure that the work is completed within three months8221;, he said, adding that tenders or quotations would be invited.
Meanwhile, SMC plans to construct 24 floodgates at an estimated cost of Rs 2 crores by July 14. Work is now on at 12 locations. The SMC has also purchased 25 boats at a cost of Rs 80 lakh as a flood protection measure.
