MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 6: Smart CHIEFTAN, proved once again on Sunday that he is capable of pulling off a daring feat. The son of Placeville-Stunning bred at Poonawalla Stud farm was everyone8217;s fancy for The McDowell Indian Derby Grade 1 the national event run at Mahalakshmi as he had won effortlessly all the three races SD Parkash Memorial, RR Ruia and 2000 guineas in which he was pitched at these centres. However, when within 400 metres of victory, a wall of four rivals worked as obstacle but his cool headed pilot R Hughes took him out and started spurting so boldly and swiftly that the front liners were forced to surrendar.

The initial pace was set by Jeweller and Priceless Ally. The victor was kept among the back markers for most of the journey of 2400 metres. The performance of Ray of Light, the Pune-Derby winner, and the runner-up today was superb on every count. Alchemy and Congratulations who were saddled by trainer S Padmanabhan finished third and fourth respectively.
