LUCKNOW, Apr 15: Scooter India Limited (SIL) has developed battery driven three-wheelers for Indian roads which are pollution free and environment friendly. The battery driven automobiles called "Vikram Electric Vehicle" (Vikramev) are already popular in Nepal, A Sahay, chief managing director, SIL said adding nearly hundred of these automobiles were already plying there.

Currently 15 such vehicles are running here, Sahay said, while urging the Uttar Pradesh government to provide free battery charging points for these vehicles.

The cost of the vehicles would range around Rs 1.30 lakh provided there was relaxation in the custom duties charged on all imported items and relief in local taxes and electricity tariffs. Vikramev is driven by DC motor with power input at 72 volts from special deep discharge cycle batteries which make the vehicle zero-pollutant.

Mahindra & Mahindra is also developing a battery-run three-wheeler. It is also initially planning to sell these vehicles in Nepal.
