December 15: Mahendra Shrestha won the Rapid chess tournament for medical practitioners with a cent percent record. Shrestra won all his five matches, beating Dinkar Desai in his concluding encounter on Sunday.

The tournament was held under the auspices of the Bombay Chess Association on Sunday at the MIG Club, Bandra East. Second and third places were clinched by Depak Tandel and Rajendra Dhamankar respectively.

VA Wagh, Deepak Vaze, Dinkar Desai and AA Mhate won consolation prizes. Sponsored by Pankaj Telival in memory of his father, the event drew 16 doctors. Guests of honour at the closing ceremony were Fide Master Sajandas Joshi and Ravindra Dongare, secretary of the Maharashtra Chess Association.

Waranju, the wrecker A devastating spell by Ajay Waranju that yielded six wickets for 16 runs helped Bhatnagar Sports and Cultural Foundation Andheri to make the semifinals of the Balkrishna Bapat Memorial Shield cricket tournament organised by the Kurla Sports Club at Shivaji Park on Sunday.

Foundation overwhelmed Springfield Bandra by ten wickets in their quarter-final clash, reaching the modest target of 46 in just four overs.Brief scores: Springfield 43 in 14.2 overs Umesh Patwal 4-27; Ajay Waranju 6-16 lost to Bhatnagar Andheri 44-0 in 4 overs.

Kandivli SC Borivli 116 in 45 overs Samir Samant 32 lost to Friends SC Bandra 117-2 in 20.2 overs Rajesh Sanil 76.

Pressi Borivli 120 in 28 overs Avinash Jadhav 30; Jayesh Kansara 3-18 lost to Payyade Kandivli 121-7 in 24 overs Manish More 58 n.o.; Mudliyar Venkatraman 3-36.

Patil, Raut excel

Balaram Rewan Patil of Sri Anand Bharti Vyayamshala, Thane, and Rupesh Ramesh Raut of Shiv Shankar Vyayamshala Kalyan were adjudjed Thane Budding 19978242; and Thane Hercules 19978242; respectively in the District Level Amateur Body-Building Association contest held at New Girls School Hall, Thane.

As many as 27 participants entered the Hercules group and 85, the Budding group.

Amar triumph

Debutants Amar SC claimed the Cosmopolitan Shield cricket tournament with a convincing eight-wicket victory over Catholic Gymkhana in the final at Khar Gymkhana on Sunday.

Amar reached 146 needed for victory losing two wickets after Catholic Gymkhana were bowled out for 145.

V Kawli top scored with 53 for the winners helped by useful contributions by Bakul Mistry 30 and K Wadkar 35 not out.

N Fernandes 35 and M Furtado 24 led the scoring for Catholic Gym who were restricted by M Desai three for 35.
