King Khan
Salman Khan is undoubtedly the star of the season. Attribute it to his shirtless state or the success of Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya but Bratty Khan has been making news even while he’s away in London doing stage shows and shooting. Even serious magazines felt the need to report that his wardrobe had been stolen in the UK how’s that for star status? But now, there is a fresh crop of news doing the rounds. Trade circles are abuzz with the rumour that Salman may not do Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum Saath Saath Hain. Unbelievable as it may sound, speculation is rife. Apparently, Salman was so excited about the film that he had even signed up for less than half his market price. Incidentally, according to sources, Khan charges about a whopping Rs 1.5 crore. But that’s not what’s bothering the hero. It’s the 300 days that he has apparently committed to Barjatya. It seems that Salman is keen to do more work now that he is on a winning spree. It seems that this Khan is following in the footsteps of the otherKhan. Quality and not quanity is his new mantra. Salman, like Aamir, it seems will only do three films a year. Does this means that the brat is turning sensible?
Flop showing
Chandrachur Singh better do something about his career quickly or Maachis might be the only star left on his shoulder. His films have been bombing in quick succession. Except for Tere Mere Sapne which came soon after Maachis, Rocky has no new hits to add to his portfolio.Betaabi was a box-office disaster and his latest, Sham Ghansham is faring even worse. The other actor who is disappointed with the film is Arbaaz Khan. He was so confident post his Pyaar Kiya… phase that he even refused to give interviews to film glossies unless they put him on the cover. After Sham…, the editor’s of these mags must be patting their backs for not giving in to his ridiculous demands.
New tune
She may not be making a comeback to Bollywood but Mandakini has decided to come back to Mumbai. For a while, at least. Back from Bangalore,Mandy, as she is called, has taken on the role of a singer. She is currently recording and shooting for her audio album titled No Vacancy. We only hope that the industry doesn’t say the same to her. After all, this is her first shot with the music industry. But those who have kept track of the actress who went into a self-imposed exile say she has been performing and singing at stage shows in the Garden City. Well, we will have to listen to the tape our selves before we decide to set store in what they say.
Water world
Ever since Titanic raked it in, Bollywoodwallahs have been eyeing the flick for a remake. Well, Indra Kumar is the first director to have been bitten by the bug. And work is in full swing. Sets have been erected in Singapore for Aamir Khan and Manisha Korala and Shravan’s son is composing the music. This love story on a ship is bound to be the first of many!
Feminine woes
God alone knows who decided that Dushman is a box-office hit. It’s certainly not. But one cannotblame Kajol for this. It’s just that women-oriented films don’t sell too well. Mrityudand had good music, brilliant performances particularly Madhuri and an amazingly story. But it bombed, neverthless. In the case of Dushman the music is disappointing. And Sanjay Dutt has not been able to do much for the film. All in all, an over-hyped film. Also, the short hair wig that Kajol wears reminds one of Pooja Bhatt in Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Ayi.
Double trouble
Producer Rahul Gupta and trouble seem to go together. After Divya Bharati’s death his Kartavya controversies didn’t end until the film did. Now he faces a fresh bout of trouble with his film, Hum Panchi Ek Daal Ke. In one interview, the producer says he has thrown out K Shashilal Nair and then in another interview he denies it. He even hinted that Gulzar may take up the direction of the film but later denied it. However, if there’s anyone who’s stood by him, it’s Sunil Shetty, the hero of the film. Apparently, Shetty even arranged for funds andstood surety for Gupta’s loans. It’s not often that stars are so helpful. But Sunil is an exception and he has certainly left Gupta indebted (no pun intended) forever.
