Adams accounts for Kramnik
It was the turn of top-seeded grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik to bow out of the World Chess Championship matches today. In the quarter finals, the Russian was knocked out by Englishman Michael Adams who won by a convincing 3-1 margin. Adams will meet tough Armenian grandmaster Vladimir Akopian in a four-game semifinal match starting tomorrow.
Woods tied
Tiger Woods and Mike Weir, who dueled for a title earlier this summer in Chicago, led a youthful charge at Medinah yesterday to share the lead after three rounds of the PGA championship. Woods, 23, fired a four-under-par 68, while Weir, buoyed by an eagle-3 at the 14th, posted a 69 to stand at 11 under par with one round to play in the season’s last major championship.
Look ahead
Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who was crowned the captain of Indian team once again, arrived here on Sunday along with coach Anshuman Gaekwad and two other players. Anshuman Gaekwad said that the team should forget about the World Cup performance and begin afresh.
Warne in form
Australian speedster Jason Gillespie and spinner Shane Warne staked claims for a return to Test cricket with impressive performances in a trial match today. Gillespie, who had not bowled in match conditions since injuring his back on tour in the West Indies last March, took 1-26 from 10 overs to show his ability ahead of next month’s Test series in Sri Lanka.
England team
England have made five changes to their 13-man squad for this week’s decisive fourth Test against New Zealand at the Oval. Opener Mark Butcher, stand-in captain at Old Trafford in the absence of Nasser Hussain, Graeme Hick, wicketkeeper Chris Read, Peter Such and the injured Dean Headley have all been dropped for the final Test of the summer.
