Crowd trouble mars Windies 8-wkt victory
Spectators throwing bottles on to the outfield interrupted the seventh and final one-day international before West Indies eventually beat Australia by eight wickets on Sunday. The controversial dismissal of West Indian opener Sherwin Campbell, who was run out after colliding with bowler Brendon Julian, sparked the crowd trouble. Australian captain Steve Waugh was nearly hit on the head by one bottle as he led his team back to the dressing rooms with glass littering the playing area.
India beat Pak
Defending champions India struck a goal either side of the halftime to beat arch-rivals Pakistan 2-0 to enter the semi-finals of the SAFF football tournament in Margao today. India started well, dominating the first half but failed to keep the same tempo.
Easy for seeds
Top seed Sai Jayalakshmi of India and third seed Anna Nafedova of Russia posted facile victories to advance into the second round of the second leg of the ITF Women’s Tennis Circuit in Bangalore today. The two scored identical 6-1, 6-0 victories.
Lankans desperate
World champions Sri Lanka have already arrived in England to defend World Cup, the most prestigious crown in cricket, and one which transformed Lankan cricket and gave them so much pride. And hopefully they would have left all their recent worries back home and will concentrate on the job at hand. Despite the crisis in administration, the team left with a smile on its face. Speaking on the eve of the departure, manager Duleep Mendis sounded confident.
Lahiri crowned
Atanu Lahiri of India won the sixth Commonwealth chess championship after the end of tenth and final round in Bikaner. Though GM Alexander Baburin of Ireland emerged as the leader with 8.5 points by drawing with IM P Konguvel, but could not be given the Commonwealth chess champion’s title as Ireland is outside Commonwealth federations.
