MUMBAI, JUNE 2: Shiv Sena corporator from Kurla Rajendra Lad, along with three other Sainiks, was arrested by Nehru Nagar police on Tuesday afternoon for violating ban orders a fortnight ago and abusing the police, including deputy commissioner of police zone 5 Rajendra Singh. All four were released on bail today.
The other three arrested Sainiks were Vijay Vasant Gawli shakha pramukh, Satish M Niphadkar PA to Lad and Vilas Keshav Chavan. The arrests were made under Section 135 of the Bombay Police Act violation of prohibitory orders.
On May 21, Sainiks had arranged a function on the occasion of inauguration of their shakha number 164. Sena leader Raj Thackeray attended the function as the chief guest.
The trouble, however, began later in the night, when the private orchestra hired for the function continued to play music well past the deadline of 10 pm. At around 1.15 am, PI J Shewale of Nehru Nagar police went to the spot and ordered the Sainiks to stop playing the music.
But the crowd, ledby Lad and others, verbally abused Shewale and accused him of being drunk. They later also lodged a non-cognisable complaint NC with the Nehru Nagar police holding the same charge against Shewale.
When DCP Singh visited the area the same night, the crowd also abused him. At least 50 Sainiks had been wanted for this incident since.
DCP Singh said: 8220;We are in the process of arresting more people in this matter, as it is a serious violation of police ban orders.8221;
Reportedly, in his NC, Lad had accused PI Shewale of being drunk and of slapping some members of the audience. However, when Shewale was taken to the hospital to detect the level of alcohol, the doctors gave him a clean chit.
