Lotions, creams, lip-sticks, eye-liners, nail enamels8230; the list continues. There are so many varieties of cosmetics available in the market that it is difficult to believe that there might be a girl who is outside the circle of cosmetic users. Every young girl has beauty as her middle name. But how many of these girls go out of their way and buy things to enhance their looks? Surprisingly, a plenty.
The word simple8217; has long ago given way to the word behenji. Many young girls believe that cosmetics must be made mandatory, as they do nothing but compliment your beauty. Sneha Puranam, an SYJC Commerce student from Symbiosis, says, 8220;If my pocket money is Rs 100, I borrow Rs 50 and buy cosmetics worth Rs 150. I cannot stay away from lipsticks, nail enamels and deodorants, however hard I try. And why should I stay away from looking good?8221; Sneha has voiced the opinions of many college-goers. They believe that cosmetics have been invented to make looking-good8217; easier.
Although many girls still go to parlours regularly for waxing, threading and facial, many also feel that waxing in parlours is unhygienic, messy and unsatisfactory as hair grows back within days. Therefore they opt for shaving. Susan Mathews, a management student from Wadia, says, 8220;With such a busy schedule of projects, field works and classes it is difficult for me to take out time to go to parlours. But for me looking clean is an absolute must. So I use a razor. I find it fast, safe and hygienic if done properly8221;.
A good majority feel that one must take out time to pamper one8217;s self. And again cosmetics has come as a boon to them. Shirin Mehta, a FYBA student of Fergusson, believes that lotions and creams although don8217;t do all the things advertised, they definitely do take care of the skin and a person feels good psychologically that her skin is being taken care of if she applies only moisturising creams. She hates girls who apply foundation cream everyday and without hesitation terms them as ghaats.
Surprisingly there are others who agree with Shirin. Even though there is a fascination towards cosmetics and general opinion is that cosmetics is a must for beauty, many indulge in heavy make-ups only on occasions like parties and get-togethers. According to Tejaswini Reddy, an MCom student in Symbiosis, foundation creams and compacts should be used only by models and actresses as they are continuously under sharp lights. 8220;I despise girls who wear foundation cream for parties. They end up looking like ghosts in photographs. Many girls put stuff on their faces only because they are available. Make-up should be done to enhance your own beauty, not to keep up with the trend. A simple make-up done properly can do wonders for your face.8221; She is a believer of simplicity and spends only for eyeliners. Her lipsticks last for a very long time.
Youngsters don8217;t stop at buying lipsticks or nail polish and putting them as they come. Mixing and matching is very trendy and hip8217;. Payal Gupta, FYJC Arts from Nowrosjee Wadia College, says, 8220;I am not very keen on buying brand name8217; stuff. In fact I buy local brands which are extremely cheap as far as Rs 10 for a nail polish. But you8217;ll be shocked to know that they have more variety than famous brand names. They have so many colours that it looks like you are going through the catalogue of Nerolac paints. I always buy two to three at a go and then put one colour. I make it look extremely hip8217; by putting dots or lines with a contrast colour on it. I8217;m known as a nail polish girl in my college,8221; she laughs.
Although many are in awe of Payal, there are others who think otherwise. Insiyah Taibali, who is doing her International Air Transports Association IATA course feels, 8220;Doing things in order to look hip8217; does not mean that you are looking good8217;. I hate the bright colours of nail enamels that are now available like green, blue, yellow. I8217;ve seen girls who wear black or grey lipsticks and keep covering their mouths out of consciousness. Make-up should compliment your face, not cover it. Wearing simple shades, but properly, can make you look hip. You don8217;t have to use outrageous colours. I use cosmetics very occasionally but then I do everything from facial to moisturising. After all looking beautiful is my prime objective8221;.
Among all these cosmetic lovers the are few who believe cosmetics are a waste of money. Abha Verma, an MPM-I student of Wadia College, says, 8220;I8217;d rather buy trendy clothes than cosmetics. I am a firm believer of natural beauty. Nothing can make an ugly face look good with cosmetics. They are nothing but a waste of money8221;!
Whatever one may say 8211; cosmetics or no cosmetics 8211; looking good is the prime motive of today8217;s young generation. How they manage it is highly speculative. As long as one is looking hip and trendy, sab chalta hai!
