Top seed Serena Williams demolished Madagascar8217;s Dally Randriantefy 6-3, 6-0 to reach the third round of the Family Circle Cup and maintain her unbeaten start to the year.

Belgium8217;s Justine Henin-Hardenne, the second seed, needed three sets to beat Slovenia8217;s Tina Pisnik and Anna Kournikova8217;s disappointing year continued on Wednesday after injury forced the Russian to retire against Conchita Martinez.

World number one Williams took her tally to 18 straight wins on the WTA Tour in 2003 by easily dispatching qualifier Randriantefy.

The American now meets either Martinez or Italy8217;s Tathiana Garbin. Spaniard Martinez led 6-4, 1-1 against Kournikova when her opponent pulled out with a left abductor strain.

Kournikova has won only one singles match on the tour this year, in the Australian Open in January.

Henin-Hardenne, the world number four, set up a third round clash with France8217;s Nathalie Dechy but was made to work hard for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Pisnik.

Sixth seed Jelena Dokic eased through 6-1, 6-4 against Slovenia8217;s Maja Matevzic but Israel8217;s Anna Pistolesi, the 12th seed, was ousted by Argentina8217;s Paola Suarez.
