
MUMBAI, Jan 21: Pivotals led by infotech stocks recovered on the Bombay Stock Exchange BSE today on short-covering lifting Sensex by 67 points. As it was the last session for the ongoing settlement on the BSE, most of the players were busy in squaring up of their positions. However, with the strong buying support from operators the market witnessed an upswing even after the squaring up of positions.
Sensex BSE sensitive index opened at 5352.63 and moved between 5441.83 and 5330.08, before closing at 5423.05, with a net gain of 67.25 points from the previous close of 5355.80. The BSE-100 index also recovered by 54.41 points at 2837.21 as against the previous close of 2782.80.
Brokers said FIIs picked up select shares while company circles reportedly made purchases in the Reliance counter. Infosys Technologies, Satyam Computer, Wipro, Global Tele, HFCL, PSI Data, Reliance and ITC staged remarkable recovery. The fresh buying in IT stocks was also due to encouraging working results.
In the specified group, ten scrips hit the upper price band after exhausting the daily price limit. Of 139 specified shares, 57 registered sharp to moderate gains while 75 showed losses and seven held steady. Satyam Computer remained the most active scrip with a turnover of Rs 451.88 crore of the total volume of business of Rs 3643.48 crore. Satyam Computer flared up by Rs 165.50 to Rs 2787.50, Reliance by Rs 14.95 to Rs 325.90, Zee Telefilms by Rs 28.15 to Rs 1172.
