MUMBAI, AUGUST 1: The Shiv Sena-BJP today stunned the ruling Democratic Front by offering the amount spent on repair of the Assembly Hall which was damaged by the Sena MLAs on July 25 after party chief Bal Thackeray was arrested. Leaders of the Opposition Narayan Rane and Nitin Gadkari submitted a cheque of Rs 3 lakh to the Legislature Secretary Ramesh Kambli as quot;compensation for the damage done by the Sena MLAs to the Assembly Hallquot; on behalf of the Sena-BJP Alliance Legislature Party.
quot; After the unfortunate incident, several citizens had argued that the MLAs had no right to waste the public money. Considering their feelings, we have decided to pay for the repairs that had to be undertaken after our MLAs damaged the House, quot; Rane said in a press conference. The amount was collected by the Sena-BJP legislators from their monthly salary.
Legislative Affairs Minister Rohidas Patil termed the move as a quot;damage control exercisequot;. quot;Does that mean anybody can go on rampage in the Assembly and then offer some money, quot; he expressed. The Government will not consider the requests of the Opposition to reduce the suspension period of the Sena MLAs even after they resort to such tactics, he said.
It may be recalled that 13 Sena MLAs were suspended for a period ranging from six months to one year after they damaged the furniture, including the table and chair of the Speaker and glass panes in the recording room.
Kambli said the decision on the Sena-BJP8217;s offer for paying compensation would be taken by the Speaker Arun Gujarathi after he returned on Thursday. quot;We do not have any specific head of account for such purpose. The expenditure of the Legislature Secretariat is made from the funds provided through the Consolidated Fund of the State, quot; he said.
