Australian wildcard Mark Philippoussis blasted his way into the fourth round at Wimbledon on Friday with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory over German Nicolas Kiefer.

Philippoussis, once confined to a wheelchair by knee injuries, now faces an intriguing battle with another patched-up old warrior in former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek, who is recovering from surgery on his elbow.

8220;Being a past champion he loves the tournament and is a great player on grass,8221; Philippoussis said of the redoubtable Dutchman.

Goran Ivanisevic last year became the first wildcard ever to win Wimbledon and Philippoussis is hoping history can repeat itself. But Philippoussis is the first to admit that he and Krajicek are racing against the clock.

8220;I think for both of us it is going to take time,8221; he said.

Philippoussis, three times a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon, feared his career was over when he underwent three knee operations during 2000 and 2001 and ended up in a wheelchair for two months.

The 25-year-old Australian still has to have synthetic cartilage injected into his knee every six months and, wincing at the memory, said: 8220;I don8217;t like needles at all. It is not the best of moments.8221;

But he insisted the knee was fine now and boasted: 8220;I am sure I will be sky-diving at 50.8221; Reuters
